'An << Address>> to << Christians>> of all <<
Denominations>> , on the inconsistency of admitting Slaveholders to Communion
and Church Membership.'
This is a tract of 19 duodecimo pages, which obtained the premium of $50, offered
some months ago by the Pennsylvania Society for promoting the Abolition of Slavery,
&c. It is a well written analysis of the criminality of slavery, and of
its incompatibility with the precepts of the gospel, but lacks that scriptural
pungency and burning rebuke which the subject imperiously demands. The author
of it is EVAN LEWIS, a highly reputable member of the Society of Friends, and
editor of the Herald of Truth, printed in Philadelphia. We shall publish it
entire, as soon as convenient. We intended to have competed for the prize, but
numerous avocations defeated our purpose. One of the rejected essays is in our
hands, and will be inserted in our columns.
