Mary Stafford - Im Gonna Jazz My Way March 07, 1921 Mary Stafford sang blues primarily in the club circuit, but she also cut a dozen sides for Columbia in 1921 (she was the first black woman to record for Columbia). The full title of this piece is "I'm Gonna Jazz My Way Right Straight Through Paradise". It was recorded on March 7, 1921. The label credits "Mary Stafford and Her Jazz Band", but some sources I've seen credit Charlie Johnson's Orchestra with the accompaniment.

The Negro Soldier (1943) WWII recruitment film aimed at African Americans. The film opens with an African American minister in church telling his flock why they should join the armed forces to fight the Nazis. We see historical re-enactments of African Americans as valued participants in US armed conflicts dating from the American Revolution. The balance of the film deals with the African American experience within the present war effort, the conditions of their living and training, with special attention paid to the respect and dignity they will have. The quality of the original film is very good, however there are a few "issues" apparent in this copy, which was made from a video in the National Achives' collection: - the original work was made up of 5 seperate film reels, there are some noticable breaks in continuity when the reels switch - the framing of the film to video transfer was a bit off, so there is a border visible throughout - there is occassional video dropout, probably due either to the age of the video tape at the National Archives NAIL Control Number: NWDNM(m)-111-M-6022 ARC Identifier: 35956 Director: Stuart Heisler Producer: Frank Capra

(20)King's Washington Speech
Martin Luther King advocated a nonviolent (but not really "passive") approach to forcing social change. King modeled his philosophy on that of Gandhi, who successfully employed them in a revolt against the British in India shortly after World War II.

King's 1963 speech at the march on Washington is considered the exemplar of his oratorical style. These clips show that he had both a realistic grasp of the current situation while retaining a positive view of what could possibly be acheived.

(22) Malcolm X Speaks!

Malcolm X rejected King's nonviolent approach (which called for lots of turning the other cheek) and called for the separation of blacks from mainstream society. After a pilgrimage to Mecca, where he saw religious black and white Muslims together in harmony, he adopted a less confrontational approach.

The clips here are illustrative of Malcolm's earlier speeches, which are often characterized by provocative rhetoric and violent imagery.
