Untitled, 1950 abstract oil. Painting won Metropolitan Museum of Art contest
  • 1936, one of first black WPA supervisors in New York.
  • 1938, won Rosenwald Fellowship. Used money to tour the South. This tour later inspired him to create his family series.
  • 1940, hired as artist for Office of War Information and Public Relations. Creates cartoons syndicated for Black papers to encourage readers to join war effort.
  • 1943, Board of Directors< National Society Mural Painters.
  • 1950, won Metropolitan Museum of Art contest. painting sold for $1,500 and it relaunched his fine arts career.
  • 1950, first black instructor at Art Students League. Charles Henry Alston Merit Scholarship established in his honor.
  • 1958, chosen by Museum of Modern aRt and S.S. State Department to cooridnate children's creative center at 1958 Brussels World's Fair.
  • 1958, awarded National Institute of ARts an dLetters award.
  • 1960, awarded Joe and Emily lowe Award.
  • 1961, Artist-critic appointment, New School of Social Research, New Yor
  • 1962, Dewitt Clinton Alumni Award
  • 1967, President Johnson apoints Alston trustee of JFK Center for the Peforming Arts in Washington, D.C.
  • 1968, Advisory Board, National Council on the ARts appointment.
  • 1970, first black ARtist member of the NYC Art Commission.
  • 1971, Thomas B.Clarke Award
  • 1975, first recipient of Annual Distinguished Alumnus Award, Teachers College, Columbia University.

  • 1936, murals "Magic in Medicine" and "Modern Medicine" exhibited at Museum of Modern Art prior to appearing in Harlem Hospital. One of Alston's earliest exhibits.
  • 1937, Baltimore Museum Exhibition, sponsored by Harmon foundation, an organization that promoted Black artists during the 1920's and 30's.
